The World’s Paradise: Bali

Bali. The name alone captures the essence of all things exotic that have ever existed.

Bali is arguably one of Indonesia’s most famous – if not its most famous – island to travelers around the world. Its already sought-after beaches and peaceful lifestyle were all the more desirable after Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love made its way to bookshops, best sellers lists and the big screen in every country imaginable.

Bali is more than just an island; Bali is a state of mind.

To me, Bali is most marked by the waves of surfboards I would see being hooked under the arms of men with sunkissed skin and calm faces heading to the beach, attached to the sides of motorcycles as people made their way around the island, beginners looking to take up a new hobby.

At first, I hated Bali. When I arrived at the start of the trip, I could not wait to get off the island and separate myself from its commercialism, its sadly Westernized ways and its adamant reluctance to give you any breathing room.

Such were the streets of Kuta, of Legian and of Seminyak.

For the most part, there was no such thing as a minute of downtime – though I later learned that there are ways to remove yourself from the calamity (particularly if you have a few bucks in your pocket) without having to leave the area.

But in my two weeks in Bali, I came to see another face to the island – one stripped of its makeup where I was able to see exactly what it is that makes this island such a special place.

Additionally, going from Flores to Bali, having traveled through Sumatra and having spent some time on the Gilis, I started to feel what I had read in every guidebook: Each island of Indonesia was very truly unique and was like visiting a new country.

I also was able to see the glamorous side of Bali through some of my freelance work, which saw me staying at the nicest resorts and hotels I will ever stay in.

And though I have my qualms about that sort of traveling lifestyle – one of luxury, comfort, convenience and ease – I will admit that I solidly enjoyed finishing off my last week in Indonesia with well-rested nights, pina coladas by the infinity pool that stretches out over the ocean and breakfast buffets that had me rolling back to my room.

Hell, I came to love Bali so much that I even got my second tattoo: a small, Balinese symbol on my wrist.

Though the island may be small, it is a whirlwind of activity and things to do, so two weeks was not nearly enough.

But don’t worry, Bali, I trust that I will be back on a regular basis.
